O'Grady lived in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her birthplace was in Detroit in Michigan. She was the daughter of Jim and Jan as a financial planner. She was a part of a couple of commercials on television, but then moved from Illinois to Los Angeles. Her first assignment was to model for Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring part on the ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She also guest starred on several other shows, as well as appeared in made-for television and independent movies. Her first major role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC Police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 through 1996. Every year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for a Drama Series. With her fellow cast members, she was awarded an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Performance of the Ensemble of a Drama Series.
